ISN Coastal Erosion Monitor
The Coastal Erosion Program is dedicated to empowering coastal communities in Alaska to actively participate in building their own resilience against climate-related hazards. This Program began in 2017, with the Coastal Resilience Grants Program, and aimed at enhancing public health and safety, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring food security and economic vitality by safeguarding fisheries. Addressing the critical need for environmental data, this program significantly expands community-driven data collection to improve storm and flood forecasting and support effective decision-making for coastal erosion mitigation strategies. The Coastal Erosion Program can operate along any coastline and uses established protocols (i.e., Sea Grant’s Stakes for Stakeholders program) and community networks to gather and distribute essential environmental data systematically. This initiative also fosters partnerships with management agencies by enhancing collaboration among tribes, agencies, and other collaborators helps leverage training and capacity, and fills critical data gaps, advancing coastal resilience and climate adaptation planning.
