ISN Northern Fur Seal

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION

Through co-management agreements, the Indigenous Sentinels Network (ISN) northern fur seal management program focuses on regulating and monitoring the subsistence use of northern fur seals to ensure sustainable practices. This program works collaboratively with the St. Paul and St. George Tribal Governments to track the population abundance and distribution of northern fur seals, assessing their health and breeding patterns, and understanding the impacts of environmental changes on their habitats. By employing both traditional knowledge and contemporary scientific approaches, the ISN Northern Fur Seal program aims to ensure food security and stewardship of this vulnerable species. Furthermore, the program emphasizes the importance of continuous research and data collection to adapt management strategies effectively. Efforts include studying the foraging behaviors, migration patterns, and the broader ecological roles of the northern fur seals. This comprehensive approach not only supports the conservation of the species but also respects and incorporates the cultural and subsistence needs of the communities that rely on this resource and the populations that have historically depended on the northern fur seal. Overall, the ISN northern fur seal management program exemplifies a holistic and inclusive approach to wildlife conservation, blending Traditional knowledge with scientific rigor to address the complex challenges of food security and wildlife management.
